Community legal centres in NSW
Many of the services in this guide are provided by community legal centres. Community legal centres are small non-profit organisations which provide a range of legal services.
Most community legal centres are free.Their work includes:
- advice and assistance
- referral
- representation in court where appropriate
- provision of legal information
- community education
- lobbying and policy development.
Each centre is different, but broadly speaking they fall into two groups: generalist and specialist.
Generalist centres handle a wide range of legal matters. They are are locality based and provide assistance primarily to people in their area.
Specialist centres deal almost exclusively with one area of law, for example immigration or tenancy.
You can also contact LawAccess, a free government telephone service that provides legal information, advice and referrals for people who have a legal problem.
